This book is written to the Black woman who has done everything right.
You earned the degrees. You held the family together. You stayed poised under pressure and became the person everyone else's hardest truths go to. And underneath the competence, you are tired in a way rest does not touch, and you have no language for why.
You have been told your whole life that you are strong. You have rarely been asked whether you are well.
It opens on a staircase. I am a child in a Philadelphia house, sent upstairs so the grown women can talk, sitting instead just behind the wall where I can still hear. Grief. A marriage harder than it looked. A worry a woman had not said out loud until that moment.
What I was listening to, though I had no word for it yet, was a room being built. My mother was the one they said it around. Not because she was soft. Because she was safe. The two are not the same thing, and a great deal of this book lives in the difference.
Nine chapters later, you are standing in that room.
Root. Where it started — identity, inheritance, what was handed to you before you could refuse it.
Reveal. What you have been carrying that was never yours.

Dr. Cratissa Schley, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of Deeply Rooted Psychological Services. She earned her doctorate from Chestnut Hill College in a psychodynamic and family systems program that remains the foundation of everything she does clinically.
Her practice history is unusually broad. Community mental health centers. Private practice. Two prisons, one men's and one women's. Forensic evaluation. County child welfare, including family preservation conducted in clients' own living rooms. She is licensed in Delaware, New York, and Georgia and authorized to practice across forty-two states.
Her dissertation, Reclaiming the Crown, followed fourteen Black women transitioning to natural hair. Their words appear throughout this book.
She hosts The Washday Podcast and Deeply Rooted with Dr. Cratissa. She is a proud Philadelphian and the daughter of the woman whose voice carried through a wall she was not supposed to be sitting behind.
